Schweizerhaus

Schweizerhaus restaurant is situated in the heart of Prater, offering a traditional Viennese dining experience. The restaurant that has a spacious beer garden is open from March 15th until October 31st. The cuisine offered is classic Viennese, and naturally, the beer garden includes the essential snacks that should not be overlooked. The Biergarten is divided into several areas, each named after the districts of Vienna. This helps guests navigate and find their way around more easily. One notable feature is the Budweiser Budvar, a draft beer, as well as the Schweizerhauser beer chocolate, which is crafted using bock beer.

According to tradition, the Schweizerhaus has been in existence since before 1766. During that period, the place was referred to as “Zur Schweizer Hütte.” During that period, the Prater was not yet open to the public. The place was named after the Swiss hunters who entertained the imperial lords there. In the year 1800, there was an inn called “Zur Tabakspfeife” located on the same site. It earned its name due to its reputation as a gathering spot for smokers during a time when tobacco smoking was prohibited among the upper echelons of society.

During the Congress of Vienna in 1814, the inn was appropriately renamed “To the Russian Emperor” to reflect the prevailing circumstances. In 1868, it was initially established as the “Swiss Dairy” and later acquired its current name, which is well-known among both the locals of Vienna and the tourists who visit the city.

Synonymous with meticulously maintained beer and refreshing stilts. Jan Gabriel was the proprietor of the restaurant from 1907 to 1920. According to an opening report in the “Wiener Extrablatt,” it was mentioned that the bourgeois Pilsner served by Gabriel to his guests has gained recognition as a Viennese specialty.
