Schwarzenbergpark, also known as Dornbacher Park, is a park in Vienna’s 17th district, Hernals, in the Neuwaldegg region. It was Austria’s first English landscape garden as a former Neuwaldegger castle park.
The park contains two obelisks, one of which bears the inscription KYSELAK.In his spare time during the Biedermeier period, Joseph Kyselak went on frequent long excursions through the Vienna Woods. He left his renowned letters “KYSELAK” on several ruins, rock slabs, and bridge pillars around Austria, armed with a jar of black oil paint.Today, the name “Kyselak” may still be found on numerous walls and squares, but in a mangled form, such as B. as “Kisselak.”The majority of known Kyselak autographs are recent forgeries.
A image from 1910 does not show the inscription on the obelisk at Schwarzenbergpark. The photo, however, is not conclusive proof that the lettering, which is clearly legible today, is a forgery because it does not show the relevant location in detail, and any lettering that was present at the time the photo was taken – almost a century later – was most likely already faded and the engraving could have a patina superimposed. The obelisk in issue has obviously recently been properly renovated. But the truth remains that Kyselak never etched his name, merely painted it.This, together with the obelisk’s strangely altered letter size (Kyselak used a stencil), indicate a recent fake.
The obelisks are also known as the Maria Theresa Swing because tradition has it that Maria Theresa had a swing placed here, the “incisions of which can still be seen.”
History
Field Marshal Franz Moritz Graf von Lascy (also: Lacy, 1725-1801) purchased the Neuwaldegg castle and estate in 1765 and had the area, which stretches from the Dornbach district to today’s northwestern city limits and was the castle’s hunting ground, converted into a nature park; it was one of Europe’s largest pleasure and landscape gardens at the time.Lascy’s tomb is located on the park’s high road in a forested area. The park is mostly bordered by the northern Vienna woodlands’ woodlands and meadows.
Since 1801 the park and Neuwaldegg Castle, which is near to the city center end, have belonged to the Schwarzenberg royal family. The Vienna Municipality purchased Schwarzenberg Park as a municipal leisure area in 1958.
The 2.2-kilometer-long Schwarzenbergallee runs through the park from the castle to the municipal boundaries.Neuwaldegger Straße, an extension of Höhenstraße, has crossed the park midway since the 1930s; there is an underpass for walkers on the avenue.
The facilities are part of the Hernals – Wienerwald landscape protection area ( LSG 6, Part A; total 6 km2).The Schwarzbergenpark Eckbach natural monument, a geological outcrop of the limestone cliffs inside the sandstone Wienerwald, is also nearby ( NDM 784, 2003 ).
