Salzburg University Library

The Salzburg University Library (also known as UB Salzburg; formerly known as the Salzburg Study Library ) is the aggregate of all separate libraries of the University of Salzburg.The library, which was founded in 1652, currently contains a main library as well as a variety of bigger and smaller sub-libraries serving the many scientific departments.The use is not restricted to scientists, but is available to the general public.

The Salzburg University Library presently has almost one million separate copies.A particular collection of about 1100 manuscripts is held, including around 375 medieval texts from the 8th to the late 16th centuries.

The migration of the previous holdings’ cataloging from index cards to digital recording was completed in 2010.Since then, the complete collection has been made available through the library’s online catalogue.

The library’s primary facility is in Salzburg’s old town, directly across from the Festspielhaus.In addition to the main library, there are around 20 more libraries spread across campus from other faculties and departments.The major library sites with books from various departments are as follows:

  • Specialist library for social sciences (history, political science, sociology, communication science)
  • Library in the Unipark (German studies, English studies, Romance studies, Slavic studies, linguistics, educational science, art, music and dance studies)
  • Faculty Library for Natural Sciences (Psychology, Biology, Geography, Geology, Physics, Mathematics)
  • Faculty library for law (public law, private law, labour, business and European law)
