The Panorama Museum Salzburg is part of the Salzburg Museum and is located in Salzburg’s old town in the New Residence.Above all, it holds the circular panoramic painting by landscape painter Johann Michael Sattler and his associates Friedrich Loos (landscape) and Johann Joseph Schindler (figural staffage) with the subject of Salzburg and the surrounding area.
The panorama painting depicts the city of Salzburg and its environs as viewed from the Hohensalzburg Fortress in 1825.It is the world’s only historical city panorama that has been preserved to this day.Sattler showed this panorama at Munich, Linz, Vienna, Prague, Dresden, Magdeburg, Hamburg, Leipzig, Berlin, Gothenburg, Copenhagen, Oslo, Amsterdam, Delft, Groningen, Paris, Brussels, Cologne, and Frankfurt am Main between 1829 and 1839.He was therefore the city of Salzburg’s first professional tourist advocate, and upon his return, the city proclaimed him its first honorary citizen.
The artwork was in its own display pavilion in the spa gardens of Salzburg from 1875 to 1937, then rolled up and saved until 1977, when it was reinstalled in the then-newly erected casino complex on the Mönchsberg. The panorama had to be removed in 2001 owing to the building’s destruction. The Salzburg Museum commissioned the repair, which cost roughly 550,000 euros, and was totally funded by donations from Salzburg businesses and people. The Panorama Museum formally inaugurated as part of the Salzburg Museum on October 6, 2005.
24 cosmoramas are shown at the museum surrounding the about 25 meter long and almost 5 meter high circular artwork. These large-format paintings of landscapes and cities were painted in part by Johann Michael Sattler and in large numbers by his son Hubert Sattler, who undertook numerous painting journeys from the Middle East to North Africa to the North Cape and from Canada to Cuba from the mid to late nineteenth century.
