Salzburg Folklore Museum

Located in the heart of Salzburg, Austria, the Hellbrunn Monthly Palace was constructed in 1615 for Archbishop Markus Sittikus as an observation palace perched over the elaborate princely garden. Since 1924, the Austrian museum (properly spelled Folklore Museum) has been located in this palace.

Karl Adrian developed the collection in 1904, and it offers a glimpse into the folk culture of Salzburg with examples of household décor, popular piety, rituals, and traditional medicine.Traditional Salzburg region costumes, a Samson figure from Mauterndorf that arrived to the museum in 1900 with her two dwarves, and other Perchten items are on display, among other things.Regular special exhibits include ones on the Salzburg state suit or collection items in creative discourse, including “Matthias tanzt – Salzburger Tresterer on stage,” “Operation Goldhaube,” or “Herz Aller Liebst.”The latter featured performances, which is rather uncommon for this location.

More visitors than specialists visit the folklore museum, which is a part of the Salzburg Museum (originally the Salzburger Museum Carolino Augusteum).
