Sackstrasse

Sackstraße is the name of the oldest street still in existence in Graz. It was originally constructed in the early 12th century. This street is located in the 1st district, also known as the Inner Stadt. The street runs from the southern end of the main square, situated between Schloßberg and Mur, all the way to the Kepler Bridge in the north.

Today, the street holds significant importance as one of Graz’s prominent shopping destinations.Art, in particular, has found its place here. There is an interest group called “Art Meile Graz.”This name has now become widely recognized as a synonym for this street.

Originally, Sackstraße was known as “Sack” due to its termination point at the northern part of the city wall of Graz, specifically at Reinerhof (Sackstraße No. 20).The “first sack” was initially a dead-end alley, but it gained a northern exit when the first “Sacktor” was built (located between Sackstraße No. 17 and No. 20).The alley, which dates back to the first half of the 12th century, is widely regarded as the oldest street still in existence in the city.
