Rollettmuseum in the city of Baden is home to a unique collection that is centered around the works of Anton Rollett, a renowned Baden doctor, writer, naturalist, and art enthusiast. Whether you are interested in ancient civilizations, local history, or exotic curiosities, you will find plenty of fascinating exhibits to explore and enjoy at Rollettmuseum.

A Museum for All Ages

People of all ages will discover their favorite items at this place. There is a genuine mummy, artifacts from the Roman era, a city model dating back to approximately 1550, artworks from the Biedermeier period, interesting stories about spa and viticulture, and rare treasures from various historical periods. You can also learn about the lives and achievements of some of the most influential figures in Baden’s history, such as Emperor Franz I, Beethoven, Mozart, and Grillparzer.

A Journey Through Time

Visitors can explore the rich history of the spa town of Baden on a 350m² area. The exhibition takes them on a journey through time, starting from the Neolithic Age and continuing through the Roman era, the epoch of the knights, and finally into the 20th century. Emperors, politicians, artists, and prominent citizens resided in the city and played a significant role in shaping its landscape. You can see how Baden evolved from a small settlement to a flourishing spa resort and cultural center over the centuries.

A Collection of Exotic Wonders

Alongside Baden’s rich history, the museum also showcases a fascinating array of “exotic” collections that were acquired through various means during the 19th century. The museum exhibits include an Egyptian section, travel souvenirs from Baron von Doblhoff’s trip around the world, and Gall’s collection of skulls. You can marvel at the diversity and beauty of the natural world, as well as the scientific and artistic endeavors of the human mind.

A Legacy of Anton Rollett

The foundation of the collection can be traced back to Anton Franz Rollett (1778-1842). The doctor from Baden established a private museum that showcased a diverse collection of natural objects, antiques, handicrafts, and technological products. The oldest entry in his guest book is from 1810. The Rollett family donated their holdings to the city in 1867, and in 1876, these holdings were combined with the old city archive. Hermann Rollett, the son of the museum’s founder, was appointed as the head of the “Municipal Collections” from 1819 to 1904. He established a reputation for himself as a poet, scientist, and local historian, and he greatly expanded the collection.

A Historic Building

The museum building of today possesses its own unique history. The building, constructed in 1903-1904, originally served as the town hall for the municipality of Weikersdorf. However, its purpose changed when Weikersdorf merged with the town of Baden in 1912. Subsequently, the building was repurposed to house the municipal collections. The building itself is a fine example of historicist architecture, with a neo-baroque facade and a tower that offers a panoramic view of the city.
