Reintal Castle

Reintal Castle is situated in the municipality of Hart bei Graz, in the Graz-Umwelt district of Styria.Johann Höllwart is the current owner of the castle.

The castle was constructed in 1545 by Bartholomäus Rues, who was the Schrannenadvocate. He utilized his coat of arms at that location, which has also served as the foundation for the municipality of Hart bei Graz’s coat of arms since 1996.

During the Middle Ages, the castle had the function of serving as a farm for the Rein monastery. It was operated as a noble seat since the 16th century. The property has changed owners multiple times, including Pranckh, Teuffenbach, Lengheimb, and Ludwig von Benedek. Since 1967, it has been owned by the Municipality of Graz.

The closed four-wing complex features a square inner courtyard, with its oldest components located in the west wing. The castle has undergone several structural changes throughout its history, due to the numerous owners it has had.The west wing of the building was originally designed by Bartholomäus Rues in the Renaissance style. Over time, subsequent owners made additions to the wing during the late baroque period. These additions included a Biedermeier-style roof bay window and a clock on the west facade, which completed the overall design of the wing.Over time, the pillared arcades depicted in Georg Matthäus Vischer’s engraving were gradually walled up. The round corner tower, which is still visible, no longer stands. The square shape with a small inner courtyard that we see today was formed through the building activity of subsequent centuries. During the 19th century, an additional square corner tower was constructed, which included a chapel on its upper floor.

An impressive portion of the original interior has been carefully maintained. During the renovation work, Secco paintings dating from the late 18th to early 19th century were uncovered, as determined by the monument office.

The forest and field paths surrounding the castle in Hart bei Graz provide a recreational area for the local population.
