Radetzky Monument

The Radetzky Monument, located in front of the government building on Stubenring 1 in Vienna, Austria, is an equestrian statue dedicated to Field Marshal Josef Wenzel Radetzky von Radetz, the Austrian Empire’s most prominent military leader.

Architect George Niemann created the red marble foundation.

Caspar von Zumbusch’s equestrian monument, which he sculpted between 1886 and 1892, represents Radetzky on horseback, surveying and commanding the battle.

Hans Bitterlich created the reliefs on the left and right sides of the base.Radetzky is seen on the left in a war council with his generals Heinrich von Hess, Karl von Schönhals, Konstantin d’Aspre, Eugen Wratislav von Mitrowitz, and Georg von Thurn und Valsassina, and on the right being cheered on by men from various branches of service and nationalities. On the front of the base is a bronze double-headed eagle, and above it is a plaque with Franz Grillparzer’s famous words: “Austria is in your camp.”These are taken from a sonnet of appreciation written by Grillparzer to Radetzky in 1848.
