Pfeifergasse

Pfeifergasse is a meandering lane in Salzburg’s old town.It runs from Mozartplatz to Kajetanerplatz and was originally named Webergasse for the linen weavers who resided there.Only the easternmost section was previously known as Kumpfmühlgasse. The Pfeifergasse was a minstrel and professional musician’s street.Whistlers, in reality, referred to musicians (minstrels) in general, and woodwind players in municipal service in particular.A “Spielgraf” oversaw the pipers, an office first mentioned in a document in Salzburg in 1488.Chunrat Amayßlfrom, the head of the Salzburg town pipers at the beginning of the 16th century, inspired the name.
