Parish church Velden am Wörther See

The Velden am Wörther See Roman Catholic parish church is located on the western edge of the hamlet in the municipality of Velden am Wörther See in Carinthia.The parish church, which is dedicated to Our Lady, is part of the Rosegg/Roek deanery of the Diocese of Gurk.

The autonomous parish was created in 1949 as a branch of the Kranzlhofen parish church.The current church was erected in 1937 according to the plans of architect Franz Baumgartner in the Wörthersee style.The vestibule was constructed in 1962. In 1988, the inside was refurbished, including the restoration of the 1938 colors.

The west-facing church structure contains a north aisle and a tower at the nave’s south-east corner.

The church’s interior features the nave and aisle beneath a level ceiling.The semicircular triumphal arch is connected to the vaulted chancel by a semicircular termination.

Andreas Crepaz, a sculptor, designed the historic high altar and two side altars in 1942.The high altar, in the form of a winged altar, depicts a sequence of scenes from the Old Testament on the left and three wooden reliefs of Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost on the right, while the substructure depicts the victims of Abel and Melchizedech.The left side altar features reliefs depicting episodes from Jesus’ life, while the right side altar features St. Hemma with the Gurk church model and St. Peter with the model of St. Peter’s Basilica, as well as St. Teresa.

A Pietà from the third quarter of the 17th century is mounted on a console from the former church on the left wall of the nave.
