Parish Church of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit parish church at Villach is located on the way to Bad Bleiberg.

The tiny Gothic structure was described for the first time in 1449.The pillar porch was erected circa 1830/40 and is open to the south.Above the nave, a wooden tower with a pointed gable helmet rises.The structure is supported by modest stepped buttresses at the transition from the nave to the choir.A sacristy with a late Gothic window is located to the north of the nave.Each of the two nave walls has one pointed arch window, while the choir polygon has three.The church is approached by a framed late Gothic pointed arch doorway.

The nave is covered by a flat wooden ceiling.From the north side of the nave into the sacristy, a late Gothic gateway with a pointed arch leads.Around 1830/40, the wooden west gallery was erected.The nave is linked to the choir by an ogival triumphal arch that is flanked on both sides.The breadth of the biweekly choir with 3/8 ending is the same as the width of the nave.In the vaults with lunettes, the old net ridge vault with grooved wall templates and octagonal services was changed.In the eastern bay, a pointed gabled sacrament niche is placed in the southern wall.

Murals from the second quarter of the 15th century were discovered on the north wall in 1967.They portray the Epiphany, the Magi’s Adoration, and the Last Supper.

Hieronymus Wirth designed the main altar in 1780, and Johann Rudolf painted it in 1782.The middle panel represents the Holy Spirit’s descent.Johann Mayer sculpted the plague saints Sebastian and Rochus as side figures.A 16th-century sculpture of the Mount of Olives, a picture of the Virgin and Child in the rural late Baroque style, and a modest baptismal font from the first half of the 19th century are among the other furnishings.Alois Hörbinger most likely built the organ about 1840.
