Parish Church of St. Pölten-St. Joseph

The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Pölten-St. Josef is located in the Lower Austrian town of St. Pölten.The parish church of St. Josef is part of the Deanery of St. Pölten, which is part of the Diocese of St. Pölten.

The Romanesque-style three-aisled pillar basilica with a transept was erected from 1924 to 1929 according to the plans of master builder Matthäus Schlager.The area in front of the entry facade was called Pater-Paulus-Platz, and a plaque commemorating Paulus Wörndl, the church’s first pastor, was mounted to the church.

On the north side, there are three portals, the central of which is funnel-shaped, and the facades feature arched windows and a historicized eaves cornice.The circular apse of the recessed chancel.A free-standing cast metal figure of Christ by sculptor Karl Schwerzek stands to the west of the church on Mariazeller Strasse.To the west of the transept and chancel, a high church tower with a pitched roof is used.

The church and the north-facing organ gallery are cross-vaulted and constructed in a massive Baroque style on the inside.The interior of the church, including the high altar, stipes with tiered reredos, and tabernacles with reliefs, and a figure of St. Josef, were built in 1933 to designs by sculptor Heinrich Zita.Sepp Zöchling painted the wall murals in the vaults and the short round-arched niches of the apse and side altars in 1958.
