Parish Church of St. Lawrence

The parish church of St. Lawrence serves as the Roman Catholic parish church for the community of Kleinarl. The St. Lawrence Church is situated in the municipality of Kleinarl in the Pongau region. It is a listed building and is dedicated to St. Lawrence.

On August 24, 1443, the Gothic church of St. Lawrence was consecrated by Bishop Silvester of Chiemsee. This ceremony took place under the guidance of Vicar Thomas Kirchbichler of Radstadt. The building suffered severe damage multiple times due to the Kreuzsalerbach and was nearly demolished in 1730. Only the portal and a small adjoining section remained undamaged.

The church was rebuilt in 1775, with the churches of Altenmarkt and Wagrain generously contributing to the expenses. Additionally, the church was expanded towards the east. On August 10, 1884, St. Lawrence’s Day, Prince-Archbishop Franz Albert Eder reconsecrated it.

Kleinarl gained independence as a parish in 1891. Prior to that, the church of St. Lawrence served as a subsidiary church of Altenmarkt until 1487 and of Wagrain until 1739. Wagrain was established as a vicariate in 1739.

In 1905, a significant renovation was carried out by Pastor Josef Seiwald, and another renovation took place in 1952 under Pastor Johann Gelb.

The church underwent expansion between 1984 and 1985, with the addition of a modern extension designed by Heinz Tesar.
