Parish Church of Klagenfurt-St. Rupert

The Roman Catholic parish church of Klagenfurt-St. Ruprecht is located in the 11th district of St. Ruprecht in the Carinthian municipality of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee.St. Ruprecht parish church is part of the deanery of Klagenfurt-Stadt in the Diocese of Gurk-Klagenfurt.

The church is bordered by the Christian cemetery of St. Ruprecht, which shares two walls with the Israelite cemetery on the south.

The current St. Ruprecht neighborhood was first mentioned in papers in 1213, and the church in 1283. The mediaeval church was demolished in 1847, and the new church was built and consecrated.Helmut Klimpfinger, the architect, enlarged the church on the east side in the choir area in 1956.

The church’s late classical characteristics can be seen on the western gable facade, where the tower is joined with a pointed helmet and gable wreath, and on the north facade.To the south, a new sacristy was built.The nave features a barrel vault with belt arches supported by pilasters.The 1956 round-arched apse has smooth walls with a raised band of windows and a flat ceiling.

Karl Bauer’s 22 glass windows from 1972 depict saints and evangelical motifs.

A massive iron crucifix of the Crucified as Christ the King by sculptor Jan Milan Krkoka from 1972 dominates the sanctuary.The high altar, painted by Ignaz Preisegger in the mid-nineteenth century, portraying the baptism of a Bavarian duke by St. Ruprecht, was relocated to the nave’s south wall and framed in stucco.Mathias Niger, a great mason and stonemason, built the holy water font in 1629.
