Parish Church of Bregenz-St. Kolumban

Bregenz-St. Kolumban Roman Catholic parish church is situated in the districts of Weidach, Rieden, and Bregenz in Vorarlberg.It is dedicated to Saint Columbanus and is part of the Deanery of Bregenz in the Diocese of Feldkirch.

The parish church is located at Weidachstraße 1 in Weidach, a Rieden district of Bregenz.The church is situated in the southwest part of the city, at the foot of the Gebhardsberg.

The church, parish hall, priest’s home, and parish kindergarten were all planned by Hans Burtscher and built between 1962 and 1966.

The church has a rhomboid floor plan.The roof above the entryway and chancel has been elevated.A free-standing church tower made of exposed concrete sits at the courtyard’s entrance.A mortuary is located to the south-west, while the parish center is located to the east.The outer walls of the church are divided by concrete struts.Over the gateway porch is an acute-angled niche.

Inside the church is a hall with a moat roof-shaped ceiling and a solid Hetzerbinder structure.The inside of the church slowly slopes towards the chancel.Concrete glass windows by Walter Haegele are placed onto the side walls, altar wall, and gallery wall.Wilhelm Derix executed them.There is a gallery on the west side.

Emil Gehrer designed the west wall gateway doors, which were built by the art locksmith Rhomberg-Sieber.The tabernacle, which stands on a tabernacle support column, depicts 42 enamel scenes from Jesus’ life, from the Annunciation to Pentecost.Over the chancel is a bronze crucifix.Egino Weinert designed and built these two marvels, as well as the baptismal font, chandeliers, processional cross, and Stations of the Cross.Ars et Aurum, a Wil SG business, created the apostle crosses and holy water fountain.

To the south of the church chamber, a little Marian chapel has been built.A figure of St. Mary with Child was erected in a niche about 1430. Röns produced this artwork.
