Parish church Leoben-St. Xavier

The Church of St. Xavier in Leoben was originally a Jesuit church but is now a Roman Catholic parish church.

The parish church of St. Franz Xaver, also known as Francisco de Xavier y Jassu, has been a prominent landmark in Leoben’s old town for over three centuries. The opulent interior of the place has remained almost unchanged since the 17th century. The church was built between 1660 and 1665. However, it was abandoned after the Jesuit order was terminated in 1773. Later, in 1811, it was officially designated as the parish church.

The construction of the new church commenced 47 years after the founding of the Leoben Jesuit College.Christoph Jantschitsch, a skilled rider from Vordernberg, was known for his generous donations of large sums of money. From an architectural perspective, this development marked the completion of the Order’s settlement operation.Leoben experienced a remarkable renaissance of local culture, driven by a combination of spiritual-religious and economic factors.

The building’s original early baroque appearance has been preserved, along with the addition of modern furniture. This is due to the building’s impressive design and size, which made it impractical to remodel for economic reasons during both the late baroque period and the 19th century.
