The Palais Pálffy on Josefsplatz is a palace in Vienna’s Inner City’s first district. The Pálffy family also held the Palais Pálffy on Wallnerstrasse in Vienna, in addition to the Palais Pálffy on Josefsplatz.
The Austrian Cultural Center (KZ. sterreich-Haus) now occupies the home.
History
The royal chancellery was located on the site of the palace in the 14th century. The land was eventually acquired by Count Maithenburg, and then by the Kinsky family, towards the beginning of the 16th century. However, the following owner, Rudolf von Khuen von Belasy, Freiherr von Lambach, renovated or rebuilt the Palais Kinsky with a magnificent Renaissance-style mansion. This palace has grown through time as a result of purchases.Rudolf von Khuen von Belasy’s daughter later married Count Paul Pálffy, bringing the palace into the property of the Pálffy royal family in 1684.
At the age of six, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart debuted at the Palais with his sister in 1762.
After the First World War, the Palais Pálffy on Josefsplatz was turned over to the state.A bomb assault in 1944 severely destroyed the home, but it was reconstructed in the postwar years with architect Robert Kramreiter. The palace’s façade was rebuilt, but the inside was significantly remodeled.
During the occupation time following WWII, the work program Palais Palffy – Austria House, a platform for international understanding and cultural exchange founded by the Austro-American and Austro-Soviet Societies, was located here.Other friendship societies, as well as today’s umbrella organization for all Austrian-foreign societies, PaN (Partners of All Nations), sprang from this.In the 1980s, PaN (then still VAG) merged with the Austrian Trade Association.
The Austriaisches-Kulturzentrum-sterreich-Haus, created in 1969, remains here, with the mission “to promote all measures that increase Austria’s reputation in the art and cultural life of our homeland in Europe and around the world.”The Palais Pálffy on Josefsplatz is now mostly utilized for cultural events and exhibits.
Since 2013, the Palais has also served as the headquarters of the artists’ organization Les Montmartrois en Europe.
