Oberwollanig Church (St. Lawrence)

Saint Laurentius is the patron saint of the Roman Catholic Church in Oberwollanig, in the municipality of Villach.The branch church is part of the Sankt Nikolai parish.

The modest church has a Romanesque nave and a 14th-century Gothic chancel.It features a pointed helmet on the eastern ridge turret and a western arbor.On the south wall, a Romanesque window has remained.The tracery lugs on the lancet windows of the chancel.Stone slabs cover and clad the roof and tower.A frieze block with an animal relief is built into the southern outside wall of the Roman-era tomb.

The single bay nave’s wooden panel ceiling, dated 1514, is painted with perspective grids and features tendril designs in the frame strips.The nave and the choir are linked by a flattened triumphal arch.A six-part fan vault on consoles runs over the chancel, terminating in 5/8 time.A Roman tomb inscription with the names of local residents may be seen in a niche to the right of the altar.The choir’s popular wall and vault paintings come from the first quarter of the 16th century.The north wall depicts Saint Lawrence’s martyrdom, while the south wall depicts the Last Judgment.The saints are housed in vaulted sections beside the emblems of the evangelists Katharina, Helena, Leonhard, Kunigunde, and Michael, as well as Engel.

The high altar, with twisted columns and acanthus design, was built in 1706 and has an altarpiece depicting Saint Laurentius.The original late Gothic pulpit was constructed around 1530 and is presently housed at Wilten’s St. Bartlmä Chapel.The previous Magdalen altar is currently housed at Villach’s Heiligenkreuzkirche.The bell was made in the 12th century.
