Neuer Platz

Neuer Platz, the central square in Klagenfurt, serves as a focal point enriched with historical significance and cultural allure. Established in the latter part of the 16th century, the square emanates Renaissance charm as part of the city’s expansion southward by local nobility.

At the heart of this square stands the iconic dragon fountain, a symbol rooted in the city’s legend. Crafted from chlorite schist and weighing 124 quintals, this monument was a commissioned endeavor in 1593. Transported by 300 white-clad youths from the nearby Kreuzbergl hill, the dragon fountain evolved in 1636 into a more elaborate structure, featuring a trough, a club-wielding Hercules, and a Renaissance railing. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the fountain served practical purposes, providing drinking and firefighting water for the city.

The square underwent a redesign in preparation for the 2008 European Football Championship, orchestrated by architect Boris Podrecca. The installation of dark granite slabs created an elegant “carpet” setting for the dragon fountain, blending historical significance with contemporary design.

The dragon fountain transcends its role as a historical and artistic landmark; it has become a cherished meeting point and a venue for diverse events. Surrounded by architectural marvels like the City Hall, the Landhaus, the Old and New Bishops’ Palaces, and the Parish Church of St. Egid, Neuer Platz epitomizes the rich tapestry of Klagenfurt’s heritage.

Throughout the year, the square is a hub of activity, hosting events like the Christmas market in winter and a vibrant farmers’ market on Saturdays. These gatherings add to the square’s dynamic character, creating a lively and charming ambiance. Neuer Platz stands as more than just a physical space; it encapsulates the cultural essence of Klagenfurt, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its history, architecture, and vibrant atmosphere.
