Neue Galerie Graz

The Neue Galerie Graz, which is a part of the Universalmuseum Joanneum, primarily exhibits contemporary art. The gallery was established in 1941 by splitting the Joanneum’s Landesbildergalerie, which was founded in 1811, into two sections: an old gallery and a new gallery. The new gallery, located at Sackstraße 16 in the Palais Herberstein, became a separate museum department and housed the collections from the 19th and 20th centuries.

The City Palace underwent reconstruction by the baroque architect Josef Hueber in the mid-18th century. It was originally renovated for the princes of Eggenberg and later modified for the Counts of Herberstein. The building was in danger of being lost, but Hans Riehl, the first director of the Neue Galerie from 1941 to 1955, saved it by dedicating it as a museum. The following individuals served as directors of the organization during the specified time periods: Walter Koschatzky (1956-1962), Trude Aldrian (1963-1965), Wilfried Skreiner (1966-1992), Werner Fenz (1993-1997), Peter Weibel (1998), and Christa Steinle (1998-2011).Until 2011, Weibel served as the chief curator for numerous large exhibitions.

In 2011, the Universalmuseum Joanneum underwent a restructuring due to budgetary constraints. As a result, the Neue Galerie Graz and the Kunsthaus Graz were merged to create the “Modern and Contemporary Art” department. This department is now led by Peter Peer.In addition, the Neue Galerie relocated to its new home, the Joanneumsviertel, in 2011.
