National park worlds Mittersill

The Hohe Tauern National Park is the largest protected area in the Alps, spanning over 1,800 square kilometers across three federal states. It is home to more than 10,000 animal and plant species, some of which are endemic or endangered. It also boasts some of the most spectacular landscapes in Europe, such as the highest peaks, the largest glaciers, the most powerful waterfalls, and the oldest rocks.

The National Park Worlds Mittersill is the perfect place to learn more about this amazing park and its rich biodiversity. The center covers an area of 1,800 square meters and features 10 thematic areas that explore different aspects of the alpine environment, such as:

  • The Wildlife Area, where you can see lifelike models of animals that live in the park, such as the ibex, the chamois, the marmot, the eagle, and the bearded vulture. You can also listen to their sounds and learn about their habits and habitats.
  • The Glacier Area, where you can experience the cold and the beauty of the ice world. You can walk through a simulated glacier tunnel, touch a real ice block, and watch a 3D movie about the formation and the melting of the glaciers.
  • The Waterfall Area, where you can feel the power and the majesty of the water. You can admire a 16-meter-high waterfall, see how it shapes the rocks, and learn about the hydroelectric potential of the park.
  • The Geology Area, where you can discover the secrets and the history of the earth. You can see different types of rocks and minerals, learn how they were formed and transformed, and marvel at a giant crystal that weighs over a ton.
  • The History Area, where you can trace the human presence and influence in the park. You can see how people have lived, worked, and traveled in the mountains, how they have used the natural resources, and how they have contributed to the conservation of the park.

The center also offers guided tours, educational programs, and special events for all ages and interests. You can join a ranger for a walk in the park, participate in a workshop or a quiz, or enjoy a concert or a film screening.

The highlight of the center is the unique 360-degree Panorama theater, where you can immerse yourself in the beauty and the diversity of the park. The theater has a 12-meter-high dome screen that surrounds you with stunning images and sounds of the park. You can see the sunrise and the sunset, the seasons changing, the animals roaming, and the weather shifting. You can also choose from different themes, such as the glaciers, the waterfalls, the wildlife, or the history.

The National Park Worlds Mittersill is a great destination for anyone who wants to discover the wonders of the Hohe Tauern National Park and its fascinating inhabitants. The center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and the admission fee is 12 euros for adults and 6 euros for children.
