The Naschmarkt has been in existence since the 16th century, originally known as the “Aschenmarkt” due to its primary focus on selling milk bottles made from ash wood. Starting in 1793, a new regulation was implemented in Vienna regarding the sale of fruits and vegetables. According to this rule, any produce transported to the city by carts had to be exclusively sold within Vienna. On the other hand, goods that arrived via the Danube River were to be sold in other locations.
