Musikverein

The Musikverein is Vienna’s most well-known classical music venue. Going to a performance here is about getting to know Vienna as a music city in a setting of the highest caliber. As well as musical greats like the Vienna Philharmonic.

Millions of music fans throughout the world recognize the Musikverein in Vienna as one of the most classic concert halls, hosting top-tier musicians. The edifice on Karlsplatz, not far from the renowned Ringstrasse road, is suggestive of a temple, erected in 1807 in the historical style with columns, pediments, and reliefs following a design by Theophil Hansen.

The Large Musikverein Hall, popularly known as the “Golden Hall,” is known for its lavish design. The roof is dominated by Apollo and the muses, while the columns are adorned with feminine characters from the ancient world. The spatial acoustics are as distinctive as the aesthetic – the sound experiences here are unparalleled in the globe. Every year, the Vienna Philharmonic broadcasts the New Year’s Concert from the Golden Hall to an international TV audience of millions. The Musikverein also provides first-rate performances on the other 364 days of the year. The Vienna Philharmonic, Wiener Symphoniker, and Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra are among the city’s main orchestras. International top talents are frequent visitors; for pianist Yuja Wang, the Musikverein is an integral part of Vienna as the city of music. However, the Musikverein Wien is no longer only a classical music sanctuary.

There are four New Halls at the Musikverein, each with its own distinct intimacy. In the Glass Hall, the Metal Hall, the Stone Hall, and the Wood Hall, audiences get up close and personal with the actors. The programs emphasize the introduction of emerging artists. For example, globally known soprano Anna Prohaska made her Glass Hall debut.

Jazz is equally at home at the Musikverein’s Four New Halls as the spoken word – actors, authors, and musicians read from their own works, tell stories, or deliver discussions on musical issues.

Young audiences particularly enjoy visiting the new venues, where over 230 concerts for children and young people inspire the future generation of musicians.
