MuseumsQuartier Wien

The MuseumsQuartier, or MQ for short, is a new building in Vienna’s 7th district, in the city center. The variety of offerings includes visual and performing arts, architecture, music, fashion, drama, dance, literature, and children’s culture, as well as new media.

The Museumsquartier features both Baroque and Modern architecture by the architects Laurids and Manfred Ortner (Ortner & Ortner Baukunst). The old court stables were renovated beginning in April 1998. Three years later, in two parts (June and September 2001), the Museumsquartier opened. The building cost 150 million euros (two billion Austrian Schillings).

From large art museums like the Leopold Museum and the MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna) to contemporary exhibition spaces like the Kunsthalle Wien and festivals like the Wiener Festwochen, which is headquartered in the MuseumsQuartier Wien, the MQ is home to a diverse range of installations.

The Tanzquartier, an international, cutting-edge dance center, the Architekturzentrum Wien, production studios for new media, artist studios for artists-in-residence, outstanding art and cultural facilities designed for children, and a variety of other events and festivals such as the renowned Viennale film festival, the ImPulsTanz Vienna International Dance Festival, Coded Cultures,Techno Sensual, and many others are also highlights.

The Museumsquartier is home to quartier21, which houses roughly 60 alternative art organizations such as eSeL.

Since 2002, an artist-in-residence program has brought over 735 artists to MuseumsQuartier, where they have worked and lived. The residency program is organized in collaboration with tranzit.org / ERSTE Stiftung, the Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration, and Foreign Affairs, and the Research Institute for Arts and Technology.

The Museumsquartier station of the Vienna U-Bahn line U2 and the metro station “Volkstheater” are both nearby.
