Museum of the City of Villach

Museum of the City of Villach is located on Widmanngasse in Villach and is situated in the old Palais Crusiz.

Carl Andreas Picco, a great builder who donated his collection to the museum, created it in 1873.After multiple moves, the museum finally settled in a historic building on Kaiser-Joseph-Platz in 1935.This was bombed out in 1945, but the collections were evacuated in time.Since 1960, the museum has been in its current site on Widmanngasse.

The old Palais Crusitz is a three-story, nine-axis structure with a core from the second half of the 16th century.On the courtyard side, the house features lunette barrels with plastered ridges and three-story arcades.AC Candoloni added the kinked, late medieval façade circa 1890.The Renaissance entrance from 1530/1540 in the inner courtyard was relocated here in 1971 from the old Engelhof in Perau.The inner courtyard is terminated by the old city wall, which has been rebuilt with a battlement.

The Monument of Names, which remembers the victims of National Socialism, is nearby.

The museum is devoted to the history of Villach.

The Neolithic village findings from Kanzianiberg are one emphasis, as are the Bronze-Hallstatt era finds from the Napoleonwiese via Warmbad-Villach, Roman-period finds from the city area, and early medieval cemetery finds from Judendorf and Völkendorf.

The Tablet of the Six Saints with Saints Kunigunde and Lucia, Leonhard, Nikolaus, Bartholomäus and Briccius by Thomas von Villach (1470/1480)

Works of 20th century painting.

There is a regesta collection, as well as a microfilm and photo archive, at the museum library.
