Museum of Modern Art Salzburg

The Museum der Moderne Salzburg has two locations: the historic Rupertinum building in Salzburg’s old town, which opened in 1983, and the modern Mönchsberg building, which opened in 2004.

The museum was founded by the Salzburg art dealer Friedrich Welz ( Gallery Welz ), whose private collection includes a substantial portion of his friend Oskar Kokoschka’s work.

It was decided in 1983 to establish a separate museum for this, and the Salzburg museum for modern art and graphic collections was established in a mansion in the old town, the Rupertinum.Under the first director, the Austrian federal photo gallery was also incorporated.

After a protracted decision-making process, the construction of another museum on the Mönchsberg was begun after twenty years of existence. The Museum der Moderne – Rupertinum Betriebsgesellschaft mbH was founded in 2003, and the second house opened in October 2004. It has subsequently exhibited collections and temporary exhibits.

Both museum buildings’ displays and activities showcase modern and contemporary visual arts. Aside from presenting worldwide works of art, the Museum der Moderne Salzburg also provides as a forum for current Austrian art scene representatives. Aside from paintings and sculptures, the museum has a large collection of graphics. Austrian photography after 1945 is another emphasis of the collection. Furthermore, as a permanent loan, the museum handles the photographic collection of the Republic of Austria sterreichische Fotogalerie as well as the photographic collection Fotografis of the Bank Austria.
