Museum of Contraception and Abortion

The Museum of Contraception and Abortion ( MUVS ) is a museum in Vienna’s 15th district, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus.It is the world’s first museum dedicated only to contraception, pregnancy testing, and abortion.

Its purpose is to give accurate scientific information regarding the past, present, and future of contraception, pregnancy testing, and abortion. This is meant to make the “force of fertility” tangible: 15 pregnancies per woman’s life are “natural,” “intended by nature.”Around seven children survived out of the approximately ten births. But, in the past as well as now, that was too much for most people for economic, societal, or other reasons.Limiting the number of offspring was and continues to be a significant problem for all eras and civilizations.

The museum is made up of two parts: the physical showrooms in Vienna and the virtual museum on the internet.

Visitors can view display goods, models, papers, essays, and videos in three showrooms. For orientation, audio tours (German, English) and a basic brochure (German, English) are provided. There are additional booklets on several themes (in German and English). The showrooms only display a portion of the collection.

Every year, the museum participates in the Long Night of Museums.

A museum tour might take you to the virtual museum. The core is a large database of the collection and library that any user may access for free. The photographs may be used for free as long as the source is acknowledged.
