Museum Kapuzinerturm

The Museum Kapuzinerturm is a historical museum located in Radstadt, Austria. It is housed in a tower that was built in 1526 during the Peasant’s War, a rebellion against the feudal system and the Catholic Church. The museum showcases the history of Radstadt and the surrounding region, with exhibits on the Peasant’s War, the rural life, and the local traditions and customs. Here is a summary of the museum’s main features:

  • The top floor of the tower offers a panoramic view of the city and the valley, as well as changing special exhibitions on various topics.
  • The second floor displays objects, tools, and machines that illustrate the agricultural and domestic activities of the farmers in the past. It also features a collection of masks and costumes of the Perchten and Krampusse, mythical creatures that are part of the Alpine folklore.
  • The ground floor presents a multimedia show that recreates the siege of Radstadt by the peasant army in 1526. The visitor can witness the dialogue between the Archbishop of Salzburg, who defended the feudal order, and Michael Gaismair, the leader of the rebels, who advocated for social and religious reforms.
  • The basement is a former prison cell, where the museum hosts temporary exhibitions and events.

The Museum Kapuzinerturm is open from June to September, on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 14:30 to 17:00. The admission fee is 4 euros for adults and 2 euros for children. The museum is also part of the SalzburgerLand Card, which grants free access to over 190 attractions in the region.
