Mühl-Schlössl

The Mühl-Schlössl is a charming castle located on the outskirts of the Grazer Volksgarten in the Lend district. The Evangelical Kreuzkirche is located nearby, and in 1910, the little castle was converted into its vicarage.

In 1560, Baron Christoph von Gabelhofen, a Protestant landscape doctor, commissioned the construction of a small baroque palace. The building underwent a significant redesign in 1898, following a conversion that took place at the end of the 17th century. The Mühl-Schlössl suffered significant damage during a bomb attack that took place on April 2, 1945, which coincided with Easter Monday. The restoration project was successfully completed in 1955.

The building is a two-storey structure with a unique hook-shaped floor plan. It features a hipped roof and a façade design that reflects the late historicist style. The west wing has had polygonal oriels attached to it since 1898.Several columned arcades on the ground floor can be traced back to the 17th century. The remaining ones were also included in 1898.The chapel tower is a single-storey structure that is adorned with a dome and an octagonal lantern at its peak. There is an arbor on columns with a balustrade located on the north-west corner of the building. The stucco door decoration is from 1898.

The former house chapel, dedicated to St. Paulus Eremita, is located on the first floor of the Mühl-Schlössl.The room, which was originally small, was later expanded. The stucco ceiling and door panels in question are believed to originate from the 17th century. The altar, along with its altarpiece, was created approximately in the year 1700.The altarpiece, which depicts the chapel saint, has been relocated to the ascent leading to the choir gallery of the nearby Kreuzkirche. In 1910, during the conversion of the church into a Protestant vicarage, a wing was added on the south-west side. The upper floor of the north-east wing houses a well-preserved stucco ceiling dating back to 1710/20. This exquisite ceiling features intricate foliage and strapwork decorations.
