The Mozartplatz is located in the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town, near the Residenzplatz and the Salzburg Cathedral. While the structures around the area convey different stories, the Mozart monument is unmistakably the focal point.
The Mozart monument by Ludwig Schwanthaler is in the center of the Mozartplatz. On the 50th anniversary of W. A. Mozart’s death in 1841, the statue was to be constructed. However, the monument’s unveiling was delayed by a year due to the discovery of a Roman mosaic under the ground, which required time to restore. The monument was ceremoniously unveiled on September 4, 1842, in the presence of Mozart’s sons. The marble pedestal was supplied by Bavarian King Ludwig I, who was a key backer of the Mozart monument. A replica of the Roman mosaic may still be located at the statue’s base.
The Mozartplatz and its structures have a considerable historical significance in Salzburg. The tourist information office is located on the north side, at Imhofstöckl (No. 5). Behind it lies a section of the ancient city wall from the reign of Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron. The Salzburg Museum has been housed at the Neue Residenz on the south side since 2007. Constanze Mozart-Nissen, Mozart’s widow, lived in the house at Mozartplatz 8. The Salzburg Christmas Museum and the famed Café Glockenspiel are located on the west side, facing the Cathedral. Georg Trakl, a poet, was born just a few steps away in 1887.
