Modenapark

The Modenapark is an urban park spanning approximately 8,000 square meters, located in the third district of Vienna, specifically in Landstrasse.

In approximately 1700, the park was designed and established as an ornamental garden. The property came under the ownership of Stockhammer in 1710 and subsequently passed into the possession of Baron von Harrucker during the 18th century. In approximately 1800, the property was acquired by Archduchess Beatrix d’Este von Modena (1750-1829), who possessed a palace and extensive park on the premises. The palace was subsequently demolished in 1916.

The square was established in 1926 as an extension of the garden. Prior to the construction of the Richard-Strauss-Hof, a municipal building erected in 1953, the square extended up to Strohgasse. The Modenapark district boasts a unique collection of non-municipal residential buildings from the interwar period, particularly on the east side of the park.

The centerpiece of this location is the sculptural ensemble known as the “Scherzo group,” or “Boy with Panthers,” created by Josef Müllner in 1915. Originally located in Arenbergpark, the group was relocated to its current site in 1948.
