Metahof-Schlössl

The Metahof-Schlössl is a charming castle located on the outskirts of the Metahofpark in the Lend district of Graz.

The builders of the Metahof-Schlössl are unknown, but it was located on a property owned by the Eggenberg family in the 16th century. From 1678 onwards, the property came under the ownership of the Counts of Saurau.Maria Ludwig Graf von Saurau, the owner of the Palmburg in Graz, commissioned renovations to be carried out in 1744. These renovations were led by the skilled master builder, Joseph Hueber. The north wing has been extended, and both the west and south wings have been added. In addition, an orangery, a glass house, a frescoed garden pavilion, and a dairy were also included. The Metahof-Schlössl in Graz is renowned for being one of the most well-preserved noble residences in the city.

In 1805, after a change in ownership, Count Kottulinsky acquired the castle. He proceeded to purchase all the neighboring properties and commissioned the creation of what would become the largest private garden in Graz at that time.In the late 19th century, new streets were created through the process of parcelling out.The Reininghaus family owned the property from 1889 to 1945.The Metahof-Schlössl was a popular gathering spot for individuals involved in Graz’s cultural scene, including notable figures like Peter Rosegger, Wilhelm Kienzel, and Karl Morré.

The park and the garden portal were destroyed due to extensive bombing raids near the Graz main train station. The little castle eventually fell into disrepair, and in 1963, the garden pavilion and the connecting wing to the main house were removed. There were brief discussions about demolishing the Metahof-Schlössl to make way for a residential complex. The city of Graz did not take over the baroque palace until 1979.The building was converted into an office space and is now being leased to various companies.
