Maurer Rathauspark

Maurer Rathauspark is a park in Liesing, Vienna’s 23rd district, in the Mauer area.

The Maurer Rathauspark is located right in front of the historic Mauer town hall, on the Maurer Hauptplatz, opposite to the Maurer parish church Sankt Erhard.Speisinger Strasse, Endresstrasse, Kanitzgasse, and Fischergasse surround it.The park covers 14,000 square meters.The park was remodeled in 2003, and the park pond was renatured.Today, the park includes this park pond, a children’s playground with football and basketball courts, a drinking fountain, and the Magna Mater decorative fountain (see below), as well as different walking pathways and benches.At the park’s edge, there is a public restroom.Around the park are the Dr. Adolf Lorenz School, the Rudolf Steiner School, the Karl Schubert School, and the Wall Adult Education Center.

The Magna Mater fountain was created in 1930 to the design of architect Adolf Stöckl and was originally placed in Vienna’s 9th district, Alsergrund, at Lustkandlgasse 50, corner of Ayrenhoffgasse, near the municipal child welfare office.From 1962 to 1965, the fountain was relocated to its current place in Mauer as part of the reconstruction of today’s Julius Tandler Family Center.

The fountain is an octagonal shallow basin with four coiled metal snake gargoyles pouring from the outside in.The Magna Mater (Great Mother), constructed of Lasa marble, stands in the center on a square base.Anton Hanak created the artwork in 1926.Municipal Department 31 (Vienna Water) is in charge of the fountain.

Other attractions in the Maurer Rathauspark include the picturesque park pond and an athletic sculpture by Oskar Thiede, which, like the Magna Mater fountain, was erected during the interwar period and is a listed structure.
