Mauer Castle

Mauer Castle, also known as Oberbräuschlössl, is situated in the town of Radstadt within the Sankt Johann im Pongau district of Salzburg.

The Mauer residence is a three-story building that features bay windows and a low, half-hipped roof. The building has a square floor plan.Jakob Graf zu Schernberg gave the residence its current appearance after 1565.The property, which was once surrounded by a fortified curtain wall, had four towers for reinforcement until a fire in 1865. Presently, only the two southern towers remain standing. The openings in the towers and wall have been sealed.

The entrance gate on the east side is adorned with four stone hemispheres and bears the year 1577.On the southern side, there is a central oriel that extends from the first floor, supported by consoles. This oriel is topped with a wooden structure and covered by a gabled roof.Located at the rear is a distinct extension that houses the toilet facility. This is then followed by a dairy and stables. There is a storage door located on the east side, underneath the eaves, which can be used to bring in the harvest. On the west side, there is a spolia, likely originating from Radstadt. It bears the inscription “PARIS EX COM LODRONI ARCHIEPS SALISBURG F ANNO DOM MDXXXII”. It is important to note that this inscription is unrelated to the castle itself, but rather pertains to the fortification of Radtstadt by Paris Lodron during the Thirty Years’ War.The interior features barrel vaults with lunettes on the ground floor. On the upper floor, you can find exquisitely crafted coffered ceilings that were created during the time of Jakob Graf.
