The March Park is a 16,000-square-meter park in Vienna’s 15th district, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus.It was built in 1925 on the site of the defunct Schmelzer cemetery.
Following the closure of the Schmelz cemetery, some of the deceased were unearthed and reburied at Vienna’s Central Cemetery and Baumgartner Cemetery. The empty space was partially developed.Part of the old cemetery, like the Währing local cemetery and the general Währing cemetery, has been transformed into a park. The March Park, was opened in 1928, was named after the 35 March Revolutionary War dead who were buried here in 1848.Today, a tombstone-style memorial stone honors the slain who were relocated to the central cemetery in 1888.
In 1958, the Wiener Stadthalle was erected close to the Märzpark.Due to the challenging parking situation underneath the park, an underground car park with a basement under a third of the park was developed in 2004.The Atelier-Landschaft-redesigned park reopened on June 29, 2006, at 6:48 p.m.Today, the park has leisure places, playgrounds for children and tiny children, a ball game arena, and a “place for young people.”The focal point is a rose pyramid that conceals the ventilation of the underground parking garage.
