Main Square Of Wiener Neustadt

The main square of Wiener Neustadt (Hauptplatz Wiener Neustadt) is in the middle of the city walls of Wiener Neustadt, which is a statutory city in Lower Austria.

Central streets from the north, east, south, and west, as well as side streets that go to the corners, all lead to the main area, which is about 180 m wide and 80 m deep. The middle streets used to lead to the city gates. Three of them, Wiener Strasse, Ungargasse, and Neunkirchner Strasse, are named after the places you could get to by walking down them. The section of road between Wiener Straße and Neunkirchner Straße used to be part of a long-distance route from Vienna to Styria via Semmering and Wechsel and on to Italy (Triester Straße) until 1954, when a new route through Grazer Straße was built.

The square is split in half by the street Wiener Straße–Neunkirchner Straße.In the west of the square, there is a group of houses called the “Gratzl” that stand alone. The classical Marian Column is in the middle of the eastern part. The so-called Marienmarkt is between Gratzl and Mariensaule. It is made up of six fixed pavilions with eleven shops or restaurants and a public bathroom. On the eastern edge, a bus stop for city buses has been set up.

Nearly all of the buildings around the square were built at the end of the Middle Ages or at the start of the Modern Era.Even though they have been changed many times over the years or remade in whole or in part after being damaged or destroyed, they still have the look of old buildings. Both the traditional facades and arcades in the northeast (houses 13–18) and in the east (under house 21) and south (under house 3) add to this.On the ground floor, there are several shops, two pharmacies, and bank branches. In front of the restaurants are guest gardens.

The main area as a whole is a traffic-free zone.In the western part, you can only walk or ride a bike. In the eastern part, you can only drive to certain businesses and a hotel. The city buses come to their stop on Grübelgasse, which is on the northeast side of the square. They leave the square on Ungargasse, which is on the east side of the square.Large trees provide shade for areas south of the Gratzl and in the northwest corner. Also in the north-west corner is the Schrauthammer fountain, which was built in 1615 and has a Renaissance-style wrought-iron dome from 1936.

Every Wednesday and Saturday, there is a market in the main square. The market is usually in the eastern part of the square, around the Marian Column, unless that area is being used for something else.
