Lustbühel Castle

Lustbühel Palace, located in the ninth district of Graz, Waltendorf, is a magnificent palace.

The early Baroque palace is situated on Grazer Lustbühel, with “Bühel” meaning hill.Prior to its construction, there existed an estate on this particular site. The building was constructed during the early 17th century and later elevated to the esteemed status of a noble residence.Today, it is no longer possible to obtain an exact date. The castle underwent renovations in the first half of the 18th century, as well as in the 19th century and in 1907. These renovations incorporated historicist elements, giving the castle a fresh and updated appearance.

The building exhibits a late historicist architectural style, specifically neo-Gothic forms. The stepped gables, latticework portal, and tower topped with battlements in the south-east are especially remarkable. The window grilles made of wrought-iron also originate from 1907. The Lustbühel Castle features a vestibule with two aisles, adorned with neo-Romanesque marble round pillars. The sandstone warrior busts that adorn the gate pillars are believed to have originated in the early 18th century.

Since 1947, the Graz Youth Welfare Office has been utilizing the castle as a convalescent home for young children aged 3 to 6.Today, in addition to other facilities, there is a kindergarten located on the premises.
