The Lumbyepark is a park in the Aspern area of Vienna’s 22nd district, Donaustadt. It is named for the Danish musician Hans Christian Lumbye and is located on Sophie-Scholl-Gasse in Aspern’s old center.
The roughly 4500 m2 Lumbyepark is divided into two sections and extends from Sophie-Scholl-Gasse in the north to a huge public green space in the south. It is surrounded on two sides by terraced housing developments, like a contemporary version of a village green.
Schmidt Rennhofer’s landscape architecture developed the park, which includes a playground and particularly constructed sitting walls in the northern portion. The grass area accounts for less than half of the parking space.
Originally, the region south of Aspern was a marsh and meadow environment along the Danube, which was still uncontrolled at the time.Aspern’s municipal floodplain existed in the area of today’s Lumbyepark in the nineteenth century, and a field existed in the twentieth. Two terraced housing estates were erected on a portion of the old field on Heustadelgasse between 2008 and 2009, and a park was put out in 2010.On the initiative of the Austrian-Danish Society and following a town council resolution on May 4, 2011, the informally titled Heustadelpark was ultimately named after the Danish conductor and composer Hans Christian Lumbye. The park is named Hans-Christian-Lumbye-Park in the full form on an information board erected to the park’s perimeter by the Vienna City Gardens Office.
