Litzkapelle

A lovely pilgrimage chapel has existed at the entrance to the Schruns town center, at the crossroads leading to Bartholomäberg, for almost three centuries.According to folklore, there was once a fruitful pear tree at this place.Following the area’s unexpected drying up, the landlord built a modest chapel on the site in 1688.Currently, at the center of the chapel is a Renaissance altar embellished with a figure of the Madonna, which is venerated by a large number of people.Melchior Lechleitner, a well-known Tyrolean artist, created the statues that adorn the altar.Under the guidance of Konrad Honold, the church was restored in 1981. During this procedure, it was determined that the 1886 ceiling painting named “Immaculata” (Latin for “the immaculate”) was the work of Jakob Bertle from Schruns. The interior of the chapel has been lovingly decorated by locals, and the rosary is still performed regularly within the modest church. The chapel’s facade bears a marble coat of arms dedicated to the Counts of Starhemberg in commemoration of Ernst Rüdiger Camillo Maria Starhemberg, who died of heart arrest within its confines in 1956 at the age of 57.
