Liechtenstein City Palace

The Liechtenstein City Palace has a fresh sparkle after substantial repairs.

The princely Liechtenstein family owns the Liechtenstein City Palace in the first district, as well as the Garden Palace in the ninth district. It is located on Bankgasse in central Vienna, close to the Ringstrasse and the Burgtheater and Volksgarten.

One of Vienna’s outstanding Baroque grand staircases may be seen on the top two levels of the City Palace. The Baroque stucco ceilings with the luxurious neo-Rococo interior, the antique furniture, expensive silk hangings, and the elegant parquet floors by Michael Thonet’s make a harmonic ensemble and provide glimpses into bygone epochs in the staterooms. On tours of the Palace, visitors may examine selected artworks from the Biedermeier and Classicism periods from Prince von und zu Liechtenstein’s private art collection.

Dominik Andreas Graf Kaunitz directed the construction of the Liechtenstein City Palace, which was designed by Enrico Zuccalli. Domenico Martinelli, who designed Vienna’s first magnificent Baroque entrance on the front facing Bankgasse, finished the building in 1694 for Prince Johann Adam Andreas I. of Liechtenstein. Between 1836 and 1847, Prince Alois II. of Liechtenstein had the palace rebuilt in the “Second Rococo” style. The building was also well-known in the nineteenth century for its technological innovations, including a four-story elevator, an internal intercom with correspondence tubes made of rubber and silk, and hot air heating with outlet vents skillfully fitted into the wall paneling. During World War II, bombs and an airplane crash through the roof caused significant damage.
