Leogang Mining Museum

The Leogang Mining Museum in the Salzburg region offers an educational experience, showcasing the mining history of the Pinzgau area dating back to the Middle Ages. Divided into two parts, the museum features an exhibition hall displaying artifacts, tools, documents, minerals, and fossils related to mining, alongside information on extraction methods and the industry’s societal and economic impacts.

The highlight of the museum is the display mine, accessible via a 130-meter tunnel leading to chambers and galleries. Visitors can view original mining equipment, experience the underground environment, and learn about miners’ lives and work conditions. However, the narrow tunnels require visitors to be physically fit and not claustrophobic, and appropriate clothing and footwear are necessary due to wet and slippery conditions.

The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday, offering guided tours of the display mine at set times, with additional tours available during peak months. Admission fees vary by age and family status. Located in Leogang, about 20 kilometers from Saalfelden, the museum is accessible by car, bus, or bike, with parking and a nearby bus stop available.
