Leoben City Shopping

Leoben City Shopping, also known as LCS, is a shopping mall situated in the heart of Leoben, which happens to be Austria’s second largest city. The establishment opened its doors on October 3, 2007. It boasts a spacious area of 20,000 square meters, accommodating a diverse range of retail and office spaces. Currently, it is home to over 70 stores and restaurants.

The Leoben Regional Court has been located in the city of Leoben since 1850. Its headquarters are situated in the historic old Dominican convent, which was built in 1280.Prior to 1856, the building complex served as the location for various institutions, including the Leoben District Court, the Leoben public prosecutor’s office, and the jail, alongside the Regional Court. The district administration and the state gendarmerie command were both located in this building until August 1932.From 1933 to 1938, a total of four executions took place on the gallows located in the courtyard of the Leoben District Court building complex. One of the individuals executed was Koloman Wallisch, the leader of the Social Democratic workers’ movement who was involved in the February struggle.A memorial stele located near the east entrance of the LCS serves as a reminder of this. The office building on Dominikanergasse housed the presidential and criminal law departments of the Leoben Regional Court, along with the public prosecutor’s office and the Leoben jail. However, these facilities were later relocated to the newly constructed Leoben Justice Center, which officially opened on March 11, 2005.

In 2005, the municipal council of Leoben made a decision that went against the wishes of the KPO council members. They voted to convert the former Dominican monastery and its surrounding territories in the city center into a retail complex. The Leoben City Shopping establishment and running GmbH was established for the purpose of building and operating. The ownership is divided among three parties: entrepreneur Jean-Erich Treu’s Cobra Jean Handels-GmbH holds a 60% interest, the city of Leoben holds a 30% interest, and Treu himself holds a 10% interest. The construction project, which was estimated to cost approximately 70 million euros, commenced in May 2006 after thorough archaeological and historical preparations. The architect Hans-Heinrich Brunner successfully refurbished and integrated the entire listed monastery complex into the overall design concept. The incorporation of the late medieval mendicant monastery led to the development of a retail mall that stands out as a one-of-a-kind destination in Europe.

The Dominican monastery was joined by the neighboring town homes on the main square (Nos. 19 and 21), as well as the corner house at Josef-Graf-Gasse/Langgasse.

The road traffic concept in Leoben’s city center was altered on October 3, 2007, the same day that the shopping mall opened.

Leoben City Shopping is a bustling hub that houses more than 80 diverse enterprises. The key tenants of the LCS include well-known brands such as Media Markt, H&M, Kastner & hler, Marionnaud Parfumeries, and Eurospar.
