Landhaus-Klagenfurt

The Landhaus-Klagenfurt, a historic edifice in Klagenfurt, Austria, stands as a testament to the city’s rich history. Constructed between 1574 and 1594 by the local nobility who gained authority over the city in 1518, the Landhaus served as the seat of power for the Carinthian Landstände. This provincial assembly played a crucial role in safeguarding the region’s interests against external rule. Today, the Landhaus remains the seat of the Carinthian state parliament, embodying the enduring legacy of Carinthian history and tradition.

Designed in the Renaissance style, the Landhaus boasts distinctive features such as a portico, a courtyard, and a tower. Among its most remarkable elements is the Grosser Wappensaal, or the Great Hall of Coats of Arms. This hall, adorned by over 600 coats of arms representing Carinthian nobility and clergy, stands as a masterpiece painted by Josef Ferdinand Fromiller in the 18th century. The hall’s trompe l’oeil gallery adds a captivating dimension by creating the illusion of a three-dimensional space. Beyond its architectural splendor, the Landhaus houses a museum that showcases artifacts and documents integral to Carinthia’s history and the Landhaus itself.
