Krimmler Tauern

The Krimmler Tauern is a mountain pass located at an elevation of 2634 meters in the main ridge of the Zillertal Alps. The route connects the cities of Salzburg and South Tyrol. The border between Italy and Austria has passed through the Krimmler Tauern since the Treaty of Saint-Germain took effect in 1920.This is the location where the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park and the Hohe Tauern National Park intersect.

The Krimmler Tauern is located on the main Alpine ridge, situated between the Windbachtal and the Krimmler Achental, which is a side valley in the rearmost Oberpinzgau. It is also adjacent to the valley head of the Ahrntal. The river separates the catchment areas of the Salzach and the Ahr, creating a watershed between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.

The peaks flanking the pass are the Tauernkogel (2872 m) to the east and the Schütttalkopf (2773 m) to the west.Today, the border between the Zillertal Alps and the Venetian Group of the Hohe Tauern is no longer considered to be the Krimmler Tauern. Instead, it is the Birnlücke, which is located 4 kilometers to the east.

Today, the Krimmler Tauern is primarily utilized by hikers and mountain bikers.
