Kreuzberglkirche

The Calvary Church on the Kreuzbergl in Klagenfurt is known as the Kreuzberglkirche.The church is a rectorate of St. Egid’s parish church, with which it shares an urban axis.

Christoph Anton von Leilersperg had a huge Calvary group erected on the Kreuzberg in 1692.The Abbot of Viktring offered the Brotherhood of God the land for a church in 1737, which was consecrated in 1742.

A square nave, a retractable, single-bay choir with a three-eighth end, and two smaller additions on the north and south sides comprise the baroque structure.The east facade has a simple pilaster structure and a squat pair of towers capped with baroque onion domes.

In the little vestibule beneath the organ gallery, a flat barrel with lunettes arches.The marbled pilasters and highly profiled entablature structure the central room-like nave.Josef Ferdinand Fromiller painted the domed barrel vault with lunettes, which included a painted false dome with an architectural view and Christ’s veil.In the chancel, a barrel vault with lunettes rises.Anton Gigl is most likely responsible for the high-quality stucco decoration, which was built in 1740.

The high altar, composed of stucco marble with smooth and twisted columns, depicts Christ’s Lamentation on the altarpiece.The sculptures of Saints Francis Xavier and Johannes Nepomuk stand to the side.The picture on the left side of the altar represents Peter after the betrayal, while the painting on the right side of the altar depicts Mary Magdalene.The three altars come from the church’s construction period.In addition to the three altarpieces, Fromiller painted the paintings representing Joseph’s death and Mary’s coronation.A painting of Christ’s sufferings, portraits of St. Notburga from the mid-18th century, a mercy seat from 1741, and a baroque statue of Johannes Nepomuk on the south side of the choir are also on display.
