The Krampusmuseum Kitzbühel encourages and shows real Krampus traditions. The museum has been open since April 2010, thanks to a grant from the city of Kitzbühel. Following a substantial joint effort by the Ruat’n Pass Kitzbühel, more and more chambers for the exhibition of the robes, masks – which are financed by voluntary admission donations as well as association activities – are being erected.
The Krampus is a mythical creature that originates from the Alpine folklore of Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and other neighboring countries. The Krampus is usually depicted as a hairy, goat-like beast with horns, fangs, a long tongue, and hooves. The Krampus acts as a counterpart to Saint Nicholas, who rewards good children with gifts on December 6th, the feast day of Saint Nicholas. The Krampus, on the other hand, punishes bad children by whipping them with birch branches, stuffing them in a sack, or dragging them to hell.
The Krampus tradition is still alive and well in many parts of the Alps, especially in the Tyrolean region of Austria, where the town of Kitzbühel is located. Kitzbühel is a popular ski resort and a historical medieval town that dates back to the 12th century. Kitzbühel is also home to the Krampusmuseum, a unique museum that preserves and displays the regional Krampus culture and customs.
The Krampusmuseum was opened in April 2010 by the Ruatn Pass Kitzbühel, a local association of Krampus enthusiasts who organize and participate in the annual Krampus parades and events. The museum is located in a former school building that was provided by the town of Kitzbühel. The museum covers an area of over 700 square meters and features more than 400 masks of different regions, as well as costumes, accessories, and historical documents related to the Krampus.
The museum offers a fascinating and immersive experience for visitors of all ages, who can learn about the history, meaning, and diversity of the Krampus phenomenon. The museum also showcases the craftsmanship and creativity of the mask-carvers, who make the masks by hand from wood, fur, horns, and other materials. Visitors can even watch the mask-carvers at work and try on some of the masks themselves.
The museum also aims to educate and entertain the visitors, as well as to dispel some of the fears and misconceptions that some people may have about the Krampus. The museum staff and the Ruatn Pass members are friendly and knowledgeable, and they are happy to answer any questions and share their stories and passion for the Krampus. The museum also organizes special events and activities throughout the year, such as workshops, exhibitions, lectures, and guided tours.
The Krampusmuseum in Kitzbühel is a must-see attraction for anyone who is interested in the Alpine folklore, culture, and traditions. The museum is open all year round, and the entrance fee is based on voluntary donations. The museum is also a great place to visit during the Advent season, when the town of Kitzbühel hosts several Krampus events, such as the Krampuslauf (Krampus run), the Nikolausumzug (Saint Nicholas procession), and the Perchtenlauf (Perchten run). These events feature hundreds of Krampus performers who parade through the streets, accompanied by music, fire, and smoke, creating a spectacular and unforgettable spectacle.
The Krampusmuseum in Kitzbühel is more than just a museum. It is a living and breathing expression of a centuries-old tradition that is still relevant and cherished today. It is a place where visitors can explore, discover, and enjoy the world of the Krampus, a world that is both frightening and fascinating, dark and light, ancient and modern. It is a place where visitors can experience the magic and mystery of the Krampus, a creature that is both a symbol of punishment and a source of fun.
