Kottulinsky Palace

The Palais Kottulinsky is situated at the intersection of Elisabethstraße and Beethovenstraße in the Geidorf district’s third district. The palace was constructed in 1853 by the architect Georg Hauberisser the Elder. It was later renovated and reconstructed in 1892 by August Gunolt and Georg Hönel. At the end of the 19th century, the late Gründerzeit building underwent a transformation with the addition of a Neo-Baroque façade.

The spacious garden in the rear has been developed and is currently being utilized as a parking lot.Over time, the former stable building underwent significant alterations and was eventually demolished to make way for a modern residential building. The nightclub Kottulinsky is situated in the basement of the palace, while the University of Graz occupies the ground floor and first floor.

The two-storey structure was initially intended to be a standalone building, boasting three remarkable facades. The front of the building features a central avant-corps, and the upper floor is divided by pilasters. The coat of arms of the Kottulinsky family from Upper Silesia is displayed above the balcony. It is uncommon for the main entrance to be located on the courtyard side rather than the viewing side. The entrance gate, which is in the neo-baroque style, is located facing Beethovenstraße.The palace interiors are adorned with representative furnishings.
