Kollertor

The Kollertor (Kollergasse 16) is a city gate in the Ennsdorf neighborhood of Steyr, Upper Austria. It is situated on the Enns River, and openings on the upper floor indicate that it was once utilized for military reasons.

The two-story gatehouse, built in 1480, is one of three existing city gates, along with the Neutor on Grünmarkt and the buckle gate on Gleinkergasse. The Schmiedtor in Haratzmüllerstraße was demolished in 1855, the Ennstor in Zwischenbrücken in 1864, the Ortltor in Schlüsselhofgasse in 1891, and the Johannestor in 1944.

In 1969, the embrasures were discovered, the sgraffito corner blocks were replaced, the stone was cleaned, and the roof was reconstructed with plain tiles.A new repair was completed in 2005, with an emphasis on preserving the original appearance.

The name Kollertor comes from the fact that carters used this gate to bring the charcoal needed by the blacksmiths, which was manufactured by the charcoal burners. The name “charcoal burner” comes from the Middle High German koler or köler, which translates as “charcoal burner.”
