Kaprun Castle

Kaprun Castle is a medieval hilltop castle in the town of Kaprun, Salzburger Land, Austria. Kaprun Castle soars magnificently and brilliantly over the surroundings. It was erected as a stronghold and dwelling for noble families in the 12th century. Since then, it has stood just outside the settlement, overlooking the valley. Today, the castle remains a magnificent structure and an amazing sight in Zell am See-Kaprun, inviting visitors on a trip through time. The ancient walls are now utilized as a site for events, festivals, and performances throughout the year. Kaprun Castle may also be utilized for a wedding.

The word Kaprun originally appeared in the Codex Odalberti on February 9, 931, with the Celtic name Chataprunnin (wild water).The building of Kaprun Castle began in the 12th century. In any event, the lords of Falkenstein-Neuburg’s domains were recorded in the Codex Falkensteinensis in 1166.The castle was originally recorded in 1280 as a tower to Chaprunne in connection with Felber invasions.The complex was taken over by the Archbishop of Salzburg, Rudolf von Hoheneck, in 1287.The lords of Felben reclaimed ownership of the fortress in 1338.It served as the archbishop’s nursing court beginning in 1480.During the Salzburg Peasants’ War in 1526, the castle was set on fire and burnt destroyed.Josef Hundt von Ainetperg, the Salzburg keeper, rebuilt the castle to its current configuration between 1580 and 1600.In 1606 the Archbishop of Salzburg, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, had the Kaprun nurse Caspar Vogl murdered for his support of the Pinzgau farmers in 1601.Since the 17th century, many proprietors have been noted.Prince Johann II of Liechtenstein sold the castle and Fischhorn Castle to Peruvian Envoy Heinrich E. Gildemeister in 1921.However, with Austria’s invasion in 1938, his family was expropriated.The castle was once again possessed by members of the Gildemeister family when the National Socialist rule ended.The modest plant’s restoration began in 1975.The Kaprun Castle organisation, a non-profit organisation of Kaprun businesspeople, purchased it in 1984.Then an extensive refurbishment began.Members of the Gildemeister family still own the grounds surrounding the listed castle and the access road.

The castle was a dwelling for the lords who controlled Zell am See-Kaprun for many generations. The majestic castle gradually fell into decay from the twentieth century onwards, until the devoted Burgverein Kaprun got involved and transformed the historic fortress into a gathering place with a medieval feel once again. Thus, Kaprun Castle is and will continue to be the village’s magnificent landmark. Today, the castle is mostly utilized for cultural events, although it may also be hired out for private parties.A grandstand with 450 seats and a covered stage may be found in the inner courtyard.In addition, some rooms, particularly the gallery hall and the knight’s hall, are now available following the remodeling.
